PAINTING CONTRACTORS
How a Painting Contractor Can Quote Right and Collect Fully
It is October and the phone is full of Diwali enquiries. You quote four flats on a rate per square foot, two clients want a change in shade, and the best gang leader is already booked at another site until the festival week.
Our focus is the work as a business: measuring, quoting, paint and labour costing, gang scheduling and collecting the final payment. We stay out of paint chemistry, surface preparation standards or safety at height. The paint company's technical team or an engineer decides those.

The pressures
we often see.
- 01A per-square-foot rate looks simple, but wall condition, putty coats, scaffolding and furniture shifting change the real cost of every site.
- 02Clients ask for shade changes mid-way and refuse to pay for the extra coat, while the gang has already used paint and time.
- 03The Diwali and pre-monsoon peaks overbook the best painters, and quality drops when a second gang is hurriedly assembled.
- 04Paint is bought from the dealer by the foreman, and wastage or excess stock is noticed only after the bill is settled.
- 05The last instalment is withheld for small touch-ups, and some clients delay payment long after the work is finished.
OUR FOCUS AREAS
Where the work
usually starts.
- 01Measurement sheet by room with wall, ceiling, wood and metal areas shown separately
- 02Quote format spelling out coats, putty, brand, shade changes and furniture shifting
- 03Paint requirement estimate against actual use per site, reviewed with the foreman
- 04Gang leader scheduling calendar showing booked weeks, with a backup team named
- 05Dealer credit and discount terms for paint and putty, checked each month
- 06Payment stages tied to prep, first coat and final coat, with a snag list before the last instalment
- 07Piece-rate or daily-wage arrangement for painters and its effect on finishing quality
- 08Snag and touch-up log from past jobs, showing which surfaces cause repeat visits
START THIS WEEK
Things you can do
before you call anyone.
- Take your last three finished sites and write down the quoted rate, paint used and painter days. Calculate the true cost per square foot. This is the number for your next quote.
- Add a line to your quote naming how many coats, which brand and how many shade changes are included. Say the line aloud before the client signs.
- Hypothetical example: if one extra coat on 800 square feet needs two painters for three days at Rs 700 each plus paint, the change costs you well over Rs 4,000. Quote it as a variation.
- Make a one-page snag list format and walk the site with the client before the final payment. Both sign it, and note the date of the final touch-up.
A PRACTICAL ENGAGEMENT
Start with the priorities
that matter most.
We begin by understanding how your business runs today, find the gaps, and agree the scope in writing. Recommendations are shaped around your team, your resources and your goals.
- A measurement and quote template that can be filled on site on a phone or paper
- A site cost sheet comparing quote, paint used, labour days and final margin
- A peak-season scheduling calendar with gang availability and a backup rule
- A handover and snag sign-off sheet that releases the final payment
Not the right fit when: Skip us for now if the real concern is damp, seepage or a structural crack; those need a waterproofing specialist or engineer before painting.
