BUSINESS PROCESS
Write the SOP, Name the Owner: One-Page Procedures Your Team Will Use
A new accounts clerk joins on Monday. For two weeks he learns invoicing by watching whoever has time, and each person shows him a slightly different way. By March he has made his own version and nobody knows which one is right.
We take processes you have decided to keep and write each as a one-page SOP with the people who do it. Someone who did not write it tests it, and it gets a named owner and a review date. This page is about the written procedure and who owns it. Finding which process is broken is the Operations & Process Audit, redrawing one flow from order to delivery is the Order-to-Delivery Process Review, and how managers report and meet is Management Systems.

The work,
step by step.
- 01Agree the first processes to write down, usually those where work stops when one person is away
- 02Sit with the person who does each one best and write the steps in the order they happen
- 03Cut each SOP to one page: the trigger, the steps, who does what, what a finished job looks like and what to do when something goes wrong
- 04Hand the draft to someone who has never done the task and watch where they stall
- 05Fix the steps that stalled, then run a short training session for the team
- 06Name one owner per process, with authority to change the SOP and a date to review it
- 07Keep every SOP in one shared folder, with a register of owner, version and next review date
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
Outputs you
can use.
- One-page SOPs for each process in scope
- A test log showing where a first-time user stalled and what changed
- An ownership matrix: who does, who approves and who is told
- An SOP register with owner, version and review date
Final deliverables depend on the agreed scope.
CHOOSE THIS IF
Work stops when one person is away, and the way a job is done changes with whoever you ask. Choose the Operations & Process Audit instead if you do not yet know which processes are the problem. Choose the Order-to-Delivery Process Review if one flow needs redesigning before it is worth writing down.
This is one part of Business Process. Start at the Business Process page if you are not sure which part fits.
