MUTUAL FUND DISTRIBUTORS
Mutual Fund Distributor: Keeping the Practice Steady Year to Year
A client's SIP bounced twice because of a bank mandate issue. Nobody in your office noticed until the client mentioned it at a family function. By then, two instalments were missed and the client was wondering what exactly you do all year.
We help distributors build the routine behind the practice. That means a client review calendar, SIP bounce checks, roles for an assistant and a view of which client segments take time without paying for it. We do not recommend funds, advise on investments or interpret SEBI rules. Those remain with you and the regulator.
Discuss your priorities ↗COMMON CHALLENGES
The pressures
we often see.
- 01SIP mandate failures and bounced instalments are found by chance, since nobody reviews the report on a fixed day each week.
- 02Client reviews are done when a market event makes the phone ring, so quiet clients are not contacted for months and drift away.
- 03Income depends on trail commission and a few large clients, and the distributor has no clear picture of how much time each client segment takes.
- 04The distributor handles every service request personally, including KYC updates and address changes that an assistant could do with a checklist.
- 05Younger family members of existing clients are never contacted, so the practice ages along with its first generation of investors.
OUR FOCUS AREAS
Where the work
usually starts.
- 01A weekly SIP-bounce and mandate-failure check with a named person who calls the client the same day
- 02Review calendar by client size and type, with the date of last contact visible
- 03Time per client segment against the income that segment contributes
- 04Standard service requests, with a checklist the assistant can follow without asking you
- 05Client documents and KYC status list, with those needing update flagged monthly
- 06Referral and family-link map: which clients have grown-up children you have never met
- 07Concentration: how much income comes from the top ten clients
- 08A monthly one-page view of new clients, SIPs added, SIPs stopped and reasons given
START THIS WEEK
Things you can do
before you call anyone.
- Pull the last SIP report and count how many instalments failed. Call each client this week, ask what happened and fix the mandate. Then pick a fixed day each week to repeat the check.
- Hypothetical example: you have 200 SIP clients and 7 failures this month. Calling all seven in one morning takes about an hour and keeps seven relationships from quietly slipping.
- List the ten clients you have not spoken to in over six months. Call two of them each day this week with no agenda other than asking how the family is.
A PRACTICAL ENGAGEMENT
Start with the priorities
that matter most.
We begin by understanding how your business runs today, find the gaps, and agree the scope in writing. Recommendations are shaped around your team, your resources and your goals.
- A weekly SIP-bounce routine with a call script and a log of what was said to each client
- A client review calendar format with contact dates and the person responsible
- A role chart and checklist set for your assistant's service tasks
- A monthly practice summary format covering client count, SIP changes and where your time went
Not the right fit when: This is not a substitute for advice on funds, suitability or regulatory obligations. If you have a query from the regulator or a client dispute, a qualified professional decides.
