Signage Business Owner: Quoting, Job Cards and Site Fitting
A shop owner needs his board up before the opening. The design changed twice, the acrylic sheet came in a different thickness and the fitting crew is waiting for a clearance he never mentioned. The advance covered the sheet and nothing else.
We advise on how a signage workshop is run: quotes built from area and material, job cards through the shop, fitting visits and balance collection. We do not design signs or give advice on municipal permissions. The authority decides those.
Discuss your priorities ↗COMMON CHALLENGES
The pressures
we often see.
- 01Quotes are given per square foot from a rough sketch, but material thickness, lighting and fittings change the cost, so many jobs earn less than quoted.
- 02Design changes after approval cost the shop sheet cuts and fabrication hours, but no rule says when the customer pays for the change.
- 03Job cards are on paper or in the owner's phone, so a board stuck in the paint shop is only discovered when the customer calls.
- 04Fitting needs a ladder crew, a vehicle and sometimes a crane, and trips are booked one at a time, which wastes days on routes that could be combined.
- 05Customers take delivery and delay the final payment, especially for shop openings where the board is up and the cash is low.
OUR FOCUS AREAS
Where the work
usually starts.
- 01A quotation format showing material, thickness, lighting, fittings, fabrication, transport and fitting as separate lines.
- 02A design-approval rule with a signed proof and a charge for changes after sign-off.
- 03Job card flow from order to design, cutting, fabrication, finishing, dispatch and fitting, with a status board.
- 04Sheet and vinyl stock, with offcut reuse tracked so waste is not billed to the next job.
- 05Fitting trip planning by area, with ladder, vehicle and crane need identified before dispatch.
- 06Advance percentages and stage payments tied to proof approval and dispatch.
- 07A record of site conditions found at fitting, so the next quote in the same area is better.
- 08AMC or repair sheets for lit boards that fail, with a response time agreed in writing.
START THIS WEEK
Things you can do
before you call anyone.
- Take your last five jobs and write the quote against what you actually spent on sheet, labour, transport and fitting. Mark the jobs that lost money.
- Put up a whiteboard with one row for each open board and the stage it is at. Update it at the end of every day.
- Hypothetical example: a customer approves a design, then asks for a larger font and a second line of text. Decide the charge for a change after approval and print it on your proof.
- List fitting jobs planned next week by area. Group those in the same neighbourhood on the same day and agree the combined crew schedule.
A PRACTICAL ENGAGEMENT
Start with the priorities
that matter most.
We begin by understanding how your business runs today, find the gaps, and agree the scope in writing. Recommendations are shaped around your team, your resources and your goals.
- A quotation template that separates material, labour, fitting and transport.
- A design-approval and change-charge note for every order.
- A job card board showing every board's stage and expected dispatch date.
- A fitting-trip plan and payment note, so advance, dispatch and final payment are clear.
Not the right fit when: This is not for owners facing a municipal notice, an advertisement licence question or an electrical safety dispute. Those need the authority or a qualified professional.
