OTHER INDUSTRIES CONSULTING
Business Consulting for Service and Contract Businesses
The work is varied and so are the customers. One job runs to a deadline, another to a season, and the owner prices each from experience. At month-end the money is in someone else's hands, and nobody can say which jobs earned it.
The shared thread is the job-based business. We look at how a job is costed and quoted, how people and equipment are scheduled, how stage payments are set and how vendors are held to terms. Technical, safety and legal matters in your own trade belong to qualified professionals and the authority.

COMMON CHALLENGES
What these businesses
have in common.
- 01Quotations come from last job's price and the owner's instinct, so margin differs from job to job and is clear only after the work is over.
- 02Demand arrives in seasons and bursts, and the same team and vehicles are idle in one month and stretched in the next.
- 03Advances are taken and spent on materials or vendors, and the final payment is left for after delivery, when your hold on the customer has gone.
- 04Vendors and freelancers are engaged on verbal terms, so rates and payment days vary and disputes surface on the day of the job.
- 05The owner is the salesperson, the supervisor and the collector, and work is delayed whenever the owner is away.

Things you can do
before you call anyone.
- Take your last five jobs and write the quoted price, the actual cost and the margin. Mark which job types lose money and decide how you will price them next time.
- Write one page of payment terms with the advance, the stage payments and the final payment. Use it on the next job and read it aloud to the customer.
- Hypothetical example: an advance of ₹X covers materials for a job that takes four weeks. Check how long the business is funding the work on its own and move a payment earlier.
- List the vendors and freelancers you use most with their rates and payment days. Confirm the rates in writing before the next job.
